
Sitka Job Openings
In Sitka, we conduct a variety of tour programs, including: the Sea Otter & Wildlife Quest (3 hour cruise), the Jet-Cat Wildlife Quest & Beach Exploration (3 hour cruise & wilderness hike), and the Bear Cove Cruise & Salmon Hatchery Tour (2 hour cruise & walking tour). Our tours are designed to explore, observe and learn about the natural history and wildlife of coastal Southeast Alaska, and to provide insight into the history and cultures of the people who live here.
We presently operate eight vessels based in Sitka. They are high-speed, waterjet-powered vessels (built in our own Sitka shipyard) that have been specially designed to enhance our guest's comfort and tour experience. Depending on size and passenger capacity, each vessel operates with a 2-5 person crew. Crew hired prior to the start of our regular season participate in our comprehensive, paid-training program. Many of our crew and support staff return to work with us season after season. Some work in similar "outdoor adventure" jobs, in other parts of the world, during the winter months.
Positions that are available in Sitka include:
Captain
Requires a USCG master's license (50 ton minimum) and an FCC marine radio operator's permit. Prior experience in the marine tourism industry and particularly on passenger vessels is desirable. Preference is given to applicants with knowledge of diesel mechanics, waterjet propulsion, and electrical systems. Must be able to build team and maintain crew morale to provide a quality experience for our guests.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Prosecute voyages as directed in tour descriptions and policy manual. Supervise all aspects of tour delivery, and quality control.
- Supervise and assist in routine maintenance: cleaning, sanitation and fuel pumping, restocking, painting, lubrication, and minor mechanical repairs.
- Communicate with Port Engineer to identify problems and needed repairs, and occasionally assist in performing them.
- Supervise passenger boarding, safety orientation/demonstration, emergency response and crowd control.
- Plan and execute emergency drills & safety meetings in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations, and company policy.
- Maintain logs and ship/company documents, as directed. Provide daily operations report to office.
Qualifications/Experience
- Experience on passenger carrying vessels and/or experience operating vessels in Southeast Alaska required. Required minimum 50-ton license.
- Mechanical aptitude, engine room experience preferred. Diesel mechanics or electrical/electronics background helpful.
- Must be able to build team and maintain morale with crew to provide quality experience for customers.
- Ability to speak on P.A. system, and to provide commentary.
- Must be able to lift and move objects of up to 50 lbs. as required.
- Must be drug free (pre-employment and random drug testing is Coast Guard required).
- Must be able to work varied shift hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Must be clean, well groomed, courteous, honest, and most important, reliable.
- Uniform shirts & jacket provided.

DOE. Limited Benefits. This is a seasonal full time position from mid-April to October. Preference will be given to candidates who are available to work through the end of the season without interruption. An end of season bonus will be paid to employees who complete their contract in good standing.

Deckhand
Requires basic seamanship skills. Mechanical aptitude and some experience with diesel engines preferred. Assist Captain to monitor vessel systems and troubleshoot problems. Interact with passengers and perform customer service duties. Provide for passenger safety while underway and mantain impeccably clean vessel at all times. Must be able to work as a team member and be comfortable interacting with guests.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Under direction of Captain, complete all routine vessel maintenance according to schedule established by Port Engineer. This will include, but not be limited to: cleaning, sanitation pumping, restocking, painting, lubrication, fueling, and minor mechanical repairs.
- Work with Port Engineer to identify problems and needed repairs, and assist in performing them.
- Assist with passenger boarding, safety orientation/demonstration, emergency response and crowd control. Maintain safe conditions underway, making minor repairs and adjustments as necessary.
- Complete routine engine room checks underway with any service related needs.
- Assist Captain in wheelhouse with navigating and/or wildlife sighting as directed.
- Assist other crew in maintaining vessel appearance, cleanliness and safety.
- Other duties under supervision of Captain.

Naturalist
Requires public speaking ability and experience using PA systems. Develop tour narrative and conduct natural history presentations for groups of up to 100 passengers. Assist passengers boarding & disembarking; provide safety and emergency orientation; and work as a team member to distribute snacks and maintain impeccably clean vessel at all times. Biology and natural history background helpful.

- Develop tour narrative plan with duty captain for each voyage, factoring time constraints, weather, recent sightings, tide, season, etc.
- Direct passengers boarding and disembarking, and during an emergency. Conduct safety and emergency orientation.
- Work with Passenger Service crew members to provide commentary and personal interaction/service with up to 110 passengers on tour.
- Assist other crew in maintaining vessel appearance, cleanliness, sanitation, and safety.
- Other duties under supervision of Captain.
Qualifications/Experience
- Prefer experience on passenger carrying vessels.
- Public speaking experience very helpful. Must be able to effectively communicate with up to 110 passengers on a P.A. system.
- Biology and/or natural resource background helpful. Must be able to learn and retain pertinent background material provided on board, for presentation to passengers.
- Must be able to work as a team with other crew to present coordinated narration and a quality experience for customers.
- Must be able to lift and move objects of up to 50 lbs. as required.

Passenger
Service
Interact with passengers by answering questions and helping with specific
problems or requests. Operate galley which includes food preparation,
snack service, and the sale of retail items. Must practice basic seamanship
and provide for passenger safety while underway. Maintain impeccably
clean vessel at all times. Must be able to work as a team member and
be comfortable interacting with guests.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Present a professional and friendly attitude at all times on duty.
- Direct and assist passenger movement during boarding and disembarking the vessel.
- Participate in passenger safety orientation and maintain safe conditions underway.
- Help operate galley, bar and commissary, including preparation & distribution of snacks, sales, stocking, inventory order lists and related paperwork, and other galley work under direction of the Captain.
- Routine maintenance including, but not limited to: cleaning, sanitation, restocking consumables in cabin area and heads; making note of needed mechanical re¬pairs.
- Help maintain visitor security while at dock. Provide assistance to other crew underway to enhance cruise experience for passengers, including answering questions and helping passengers with specific problems/requests.
- Other duties under supervision of Captain.

Supply & Retail Coordinator
Manage tour and retail supply inventory for fleet of vessels. Schedule and monitor vendor deliveries and handle stocking of goods received. Manage retail cash/check/credit card receipts for each vessel and balance at end of tour day. Track use of supplies and keep accurate records and prepare periodic reports. Must have previous experience with inventory control including ordering, tracking, and stocking of supplies and merchandise. Must be able to work in assorted locations: vessels, dock, storage facility and/or main office. Must have valid driver's license and good driving record. This is a shore-based position.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Manage tour and retail inventory may include purchasing, receiving, stocking and distributing all vessel supplies. Products to include cleaning and paper supplies; food and beverage inventory; clothing, books and other retail items.
- Work closely with purchasing office in Sitka, to price and procure all products.
- Balance, reconcile and report all daily retail receipts from each vessel and/or crew.
- Track use of all tour supplies, keep accurate records, and prepare periodic reports to generate a final report at the end of the season.
- Coordinate and manage the cleaning of all vessel laundry (cloth towels, window diapers and rags).
- Develop procedural systems for efficient distribution of all products to various vessels in fleet.
- Assist in training with all Passenger Service crew members in the use of supplies and the submission of paper work, and monitor performance throughout season.
- Maintain clean and orderly on site and remote storage areas.
- Act in a professional and pleasant manner in executing responsibilities as a liaison with crewmembers and local purveyors.
- Coordinate with Sales & Service Manager to satisfy needs for special charters and events.
- Report to Operations Manager on a regular basis and in a timely manner to solve problems and expedite solutions.
Qualifications/Experience
- Must have previous experience with inventory control; including ordering, tracking, and stocking of supplies and merchandise.
- Prefer previous experience in transportation or tourism industry.
- Must be proficient in the use of a variety of computer programs, including Word and Excel.
- Must be honest and capable of handling and balancing cash/check/cc receivables on daily basis.
- Must possess exceptional communication and organization skills; and have the ability to multi-task and remain flexible in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
- Must have the ability to work independently, while operating effectively as part of a team.
- Must be drug-free (Coast Guard pre-employment and random drug test required).
- Must be able to lift and move objects of up to 50 pounds, or as required.
- Must be able to work varied shift hours, including weekends and holidays; and in assorted locations, either dock, storage facility, vessels and/or main office.

Tour Representative
Direct & assist guests while dispatching Allen Marine tour vessels. Company liason to ship staff and assist with sales & logistics. Collect tickets and conduct end-of-day settlements. Assist with periodic reports & distribution of marketing materials. Present a professional and friendly attitude at all times (no matter how cold, wet and tired you get) and be able to answer an infinite variety of questions. Must be able to stand for long periods of time; walk up to 3 miles per day; be able to complete tasks with minimal supervision and have excellent math skills. Must be able to work as a team member and be comfortable interacting with strangers. This is a shore-based position.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Present a professional and friendly attitude at all times while answering a variety of questions regarding Allen Marine Tours, Sitka, and SE Alaska.

- Collect tickets/vouchers and conduct end-of-day settlements.
- Help dispatch and coordinate tour vessels, motorcoaches, and company vehicles in a professional and courteous manner.
- Act as company liaison to shore excursion staff, assisting with sales and logistics, including special needs guests.

- Assist with distribution of promotional tour materials.
- Data entry for various reports and ongoing surveys.
