Ketchikan Job Openings

In Ketchikan, we conduct three tour programs: the Misty Fjords & Wilderness Explorer cruise (4.5 hour duration), the cruise and cannery portions of the Best of Ketchikan by Land & Sea (1.5 hour cruise), and the cruise portion of the Adventure Kart Expedition (1 hour cruise). Our tours are designed to explore, observe and learn about the natural history and wildlife of Southeast Alaska.

We presently operate five vessels based in Ketchikan. They are high-speed, waterjet-powered vessels (built in our own Sitka shipyard) that have been specially designed to enhance our guest's comfort and tour experience.  Depending on size and passenger capacity, each vessel operates with a 3-6 person crew. Many of our crew and support staff return to work with us season after season. Some work in similar "outdoor adventure" jobs, in other parts of the world, during the winter months.

Positions that are available in Ketchikan include:

Captain

Requires a USCG master's license (50 ton minimum) and an FCC marine radio operator's permit.  Prior experience in the marine tourism industry and particularly on passenger vessels is desirable.  Preference is given to applicants with knowledge of diesel mechanics, waterjet propulsion, and electrical systems.  Must be able to build team and maintain crew moral to provide a quality experience for our guests.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Conduct tours as directed according to descriptions in sales literature and procedures in policy manual. Supervise all aspects of tour delivery and tour quality.
  • Manage and direct crew members in the execution of all their job responsibilities; build a productive and efficient team; maintain high morale over course of season.
  • Supervise and assist in daily maintenance: cleaning, sewage and fuel pumping, restocking. Coordinate and assist with routine maintenance; painting, changing oil, etc.
  • Communicate with Port Engineer to identify problems and expedite repairs; assist with repairs, as needed.
  • Supervise passenger boarding, safety orientation/demonstration, emergency response and crowd control.
  • Plan and execute emergency drills, equipment checks and safety meetings in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and AMT policy.
  • Maintain all navigational equipment in good working order; keep logs and ship/company documents, as directed. Provide daily operations report to office.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Experience on passenger vessels and/or experience operating vessels in Southeast Alaska required. Required minimum 50-ton license.
  • Mechanical aptitude, engine room experience preferred. Diesel mechanics or electrical/electronics background helpful.
  • Must have ability to build effective team and skills required to resolve crew conflicts in order to provide quality experience for customers.
  • Must have ability to speak on P.A. system, and to provide commentary.
  • Must be able to lift and move objects of up to 50 lbs. as required.
  • Must be drug free (pre-employment screening and enrollment in random drug testing program is Coast Guard required).
  • Must be able to work varied shift hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Must be clean, well groomed, courteous, honest, and most important, reliable.

Engineer/Deckhand

Requires basic seamanship skills.  Mechanical aptitude and some experience with diesel engines preferred.  Assist Captain to monitor vessel systems and troubleshoot problems.  Interact with passengers and perform customer service duties.  Provide for passenger safety while underway and maintain impeccably clean vessel at all times.  Must be able to work as a team member and be comfortable interacting with guests.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Check all engine/jet fluids upon arriving on vessel each morning, bring all equipment online, log all entries and report any problems to Captain.
  • Assist with passenger boarding, safety orientation/demonstration, emergency response and crowd control.
  • Complete routine engine room checks underway, making minor mechanical repairs and adjustments as necessary, and assisting crew members to ensure that passengers receive optimum tour quality and premium customer service.
  • Assist Captain in wheelhouse with navigating and/or wildlife sighting as directed.
  • Maintain vessel appearance, with regards to cleanliness and safety, in engine and jet rooms, in voids and on decks. Assist other crew with cabin, galley and heads.
  • Under direction of Captain, complete all routine vessel maintenance on a daily basis. This will include, but not be limited to: cleaning, sanitation pumping, restocking and refueling.
  • Assist Captain to perform required safety checks of all essential equipment on a weekly basis. Maintain current and accurate logs.
  • Work with Port Engineer to complete all mandatory vessel maintenance on a monthly basis, including but not limited to oil/filter changes, zinc/belt replacement, etc.
  • Identify problems, inform Port Engineer and assist in performing needed repairs.
  • Perform other duties under supervision of Captain.

  • Prefer experience on passenger carrying vessels.

Naturalist

Requires public speaking ability and experience using PA systems.  Develop tour narrative and conduct natural history presentations for groups of up to 150 passengers.  Assist passengers boarding & disembarking; provide safety and emergency orientation; and work as a team member to distribute snacks and maintain impeccably clean vessel at all times.  Biology and natural history background helpful.

  • Develop tour narrative plan with duty captain for each voyage, factoring time constraints, weather, recent sightings, tide, season, etc.
  • Direct passengers boarding and disembarking, and during an emergency. Conduct safety and emergency orientation.

  • Assist other crew in maintaining vessel appearance, cleanliness, sanitation, and safety.

Passenger Service

Interact with passengers by answering questions and helping with specific problems or requests.  Operate galley which includes food preparation, snack service, and the sale of retail items.  Must practice basic seamanship and provide for passenger safety while underway.  Maintain impeccably clean vessel at all times.  Must be able to work as a team member and be comfortable interacting with guests.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Present a professional and friendly attitude at all times on duty.
  • Direct and assist passenger movement during boarding and disembarking the vessel.
  • Participate in passenger safety orientation and maintain safe conditions underway.
  • Help operate galley, bar and commissary, including preparation & distribution of snacks, sales, stocking, inventory order lists and related paperwork, and other galley work under direction of the Captain.
  • Routine maintenance including, but not limited to: cleaning, sanitation, restocking consumables in cabin area and heads; making note of needed equipment repairs.
  • Help maintain visitor security while at dock. Provide assistance to other crew while underway to enhance cruise experience for passengers, including answering questions and helping passengers with specific problems/requests.
  • Other duties, as needed, under supervision of Captain.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Prefer experience on passenger carrying vessels.
  • Must be able to make change, keep records and maintain a professional, friendly attitude toward customers.
  • Previous retail experience preferred.

Interpretive Guide

Conduct walking tours through the historic George Inlet Salmon Cannery, located in a picturesque, wilderness setting. Present the fascinating culture and lore of a by-gone era and uniquely Alaskan way of life, leading groups of 16-48 guests at a time. Requires public speaking ability and an enthusiastic/theatrical presentation style. Must take pride in presenting history with accuracy and authenticity. Some light maintenance of cannery grounds required. This is a shore-based position.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Meet all tour buses and Allen Marine tour vessels, escort passengers through facility and conduct narrated tour of site.
  • Develop tour narrative as directed by supervisor with emphasis on cultural details of life during this former period and with respect for historic accuracy.
  • Work with other guides on site to facilitate group flow and maintain tour timing as move through different buildings and different exhibits.
  • Train to demonstrate machinery on the only half-pound can reform line still in existence.
  • Assist other guides to maintain parking lot, grounds, bathrooms and buildings in a clean and orderly manner on a daily basis.
  • Must be conscious of and provide for the safety and comfort of guests at all times.
  • Must wear comfortable period attire provided by company and project professional and confident image.
  • Must be willing to perform other onsite duties as specified by supervisor.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Public speaking experience required, dramatic experience helpful.

Tour Representative

Direct and assist guests while loading tour buses and boats. Act as a company liaison to ship staff and assist with sales and logistics. Collect tickets and conduct end-of-day settlements. Assist with periodic reports and distribution of marketing materials. Present a professional and friendly attitude at all times (no matter how cold, wet and tired you get) and be able to answer an infinite variety of questions. Must be able to stand for long periods of time; walk up to 3 miles per day; be able to complete tasks with minimal supervision and have excellent math skills. Must be able to work as a team member and be comfortable interacting with strangers. This is a shore-based position.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Company liaison to shore excursion staff, assisting with sales and logistics. This includes working with bus companies and ship staffs to insure passengers’ special needs are met.
  • Direct and assist passenger movement between cruise ship and tour embarkation.
  • Collect tickets/vouchers as passengers board vessels and motor coaches.
  • Effectively communicate with other Allen Marine employees via company radios.
  • Conduct settlement transactions with cruise line representatives.

Administrative Coordinator

Must be computer proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Quickbooks with strong organizational skills. Answers telephones, greets public and maintains general office files. Maintains office equipment and supplies. Responds to all Independent Tour inquiries; processes advance independent ticket sales; creates daily sales reports; and distributes passenger manifest lists for boat crews. Provides clerical support to Sales and Service Manager and Operations Manager. This is a shore-based position.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Coordinate independent visitor tour sales including:

    ~Answer office toll-free information line & respond to inquiries.
    ~Process advance ticket sales and create periodic sales reports for submission to A/R.
    ~Distribute passenger manifest lists for boat crews.
    ~Coordinate ticket sales for local vendor contacts.

  • Tracks A/P receipts, creating periodic reports for main office in Sitka.
  • Assist with documentation of new employees and creating pre-season employment training programs and support materials.
  • Maintain confidential and sensitive files.
  • Promptly answer all incoming calls with proper telephone etiquette; must sound professional, credible, pleasant and sincere.
  • Ensure office equipment is in working order; trouble shoot equipment problems & schedule service calls for equipment, as needed. Maintain office supplies for division and process daily mail needs.
  • Maintain organized general office files and office work area. Assist all staff to maintain a clean, organized office.
  • Assist with special events and staff events.
  • Provide clerical support to managers as needed. Assist with dockside tour dispatch as needed.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Previous office or customer service experience a must; and previous experience in the visitor industry and/or a related industry preferred.

  • Job requires a strong multi-tasker with highly developed communication & organizational skills. Must have the ability to work independently, and in a team-oriented environment.

Supply & Retail Coordinator

Manage tour and retail supply inventory for fleet of vessels. Schedule and monitor vendor deliveries; receive and stock goods. Manage retail cash/check/credit card receipts for each vessel and balance at end of tour day. Track use of supplies, keep accurate records and prepare periodic reports. Must have previous experience with inventory control including ordering, tracking, and stocking and displaying of supplies and merchandise. Must be able to work in assorted locations, either dock, storage facility, vessels and/or main office. Need a valid driver's license and good driving record. This is a shore-based position.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Manage tour and retail inventory may include purchasing, receiving, stocking and distributing all vessel supplies. Products to include cleaning and paper supplies; food and beverage inventory; clothing, books and other retail items.
  • Work closely with purchasing office in Sitka, to price and procure all products.
  • Balance, reconcile and report all daily retail receipts from each vessel and/or crew.
  • Track use of all tour supplies, keep accurate records, and prepare periodic reports to generate a final report at the end of the season.
  • Coordinate and manage the cleaning of all vessel laundry (cloth towels, window diapers and rags).
  • Develop procedural systems for efficient distribution of all products to various vessels in fleet.
  • Assist in training with all Passenger Service crew members in the use of supplies and the submission of paper work, and monitor performance throughout season.
  • Maintain clean and orderly on site and remote storage areas.
  • Act in a professional and pleasant manner in executing responsibilities as a liaison with crewmembers and local purveyors.
  • Coordinate with Sales & Service Manager to satisfy needs for special charters and events.
  • Report to Operations Manager on a regular basis and in a timely manner to solve problems and expedite solutions.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Must have previous experience with inventory control; including ordering, tracking, and stocking of supplies and merchandise.
  • Prefer previous experience in transportation or tourism industry.
  • Must be proficient in the use of a variety of computer programs, including Word and Excel.
  • Must be honest and capable of handling and balancing cash/check/cc receivables on daily basis.
  • Must possess exceptional communication and organization skills; and have the ability to multi-task and remain flexible in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
